On October 2, footage of a captive Israeli soldier was broadcast
around the world. The sergeant, 23-year-old Gilad Shalit, was captured
by Palestinian militants three years ago and has been held in the
blockaded and bomb-struck Gaza Strip. The video--which showed a
healthy but sallow Shalit--reached Israeli hands in exchange for the
release of twenty female Palestinian prisoners. Tucked tightly away
between the lines of the news was the story of another, even more
youthful captive, Bara'a Malki: a naïve 15-year-old runaway,
improbably convicted of attempted murder and now one of the twenty
discharged.

Children of the Occupation

Israeli/Palestinian Conflict

Andrea D'Cruz: Hundreds of Palestinian children are imprisoned
in Israeli jails every year. Their story, overlooked in recent media
reports, tells the true cost of the occupation.

Last year, Bara'a and her classmate Samah decided to run away from
home to escape overbearing parents and, in Samah's case, the prospect
of a forced marriage to a man two decades her senior. But the West
Bank, carved up as it is by 613 army-imposed obstacles--checkpoints,
roadblocks, trenches--and overlaid with a web of community
connections, did not present the two girls with many hiding places. So
on December 2 they left the Al Jalazun Refugee Camp with a desperate
plan to get arrested and imprisoned.

Packing kitchen knives in their school bags, they entered the Qalandya
checkpoint outside Ramallah. At the ID check, Bara'a pulled out her
knife and placed it in front of a female soldier standing behind
bulletproof glass. Security officers quickly marshaled her into a
room. When an officer shouted, "Why do you have a knife? Do you want
to kill one of us?" Bara'a replied, "I have problems with my family,
and I came to the checkpoint to get arrested."

Bara'a was then taken to a detention center in Jerusalem, where an
Israeli interrogator, refusing to believe her story about an unhappy
home life, repeatedly insisted that she had come to the checkpoint to
kill a soldier. Finally, Bara'a echoed the interrogator's words back
to him. On the basis of this confession, an Israeli military court
sentenced Bara'a to eleven months' imprisonment for attempted murder.

Bara'a and Samah are just two of the 700 Palestinian children Israel
detains and prosecutes annually. Every year there are a handful of
cases like theirs, in which Palestinian girls with difficulties at
home deliberately take knives through checkpoints in order to be
arrested. But the most common charge brought against Palestinian
children is stone- throwing--often at the concrete mass of the
separation wall--an offense punishable by up to twenty years'
imprisonment under Israeli Military Order 378, one of 1,500-plus
orders that have dictated Palestinian life under occupation for more
than four decades.

In 95 percent of the 700 annual child cases, convictions result from
false or improperly obtained confessions, including many that are
wrung out of unaccompanied children through coercive interrogation
methods or even torture. According to a recent report by Defense for
Children International (DCI), "The ill-treatment and torture of
Palestinian children by Israeli authorities is widespread, systematic
and institutionalised." During interrogation children as young as 12
are often subject to solitary confinement, sleep deprivation and
painful shackling for long periods of time. One boy was told, "I will
shoot you in the head if you don't confess and stick your head in a
bucket full of water until you choke and die." Another yielded after a
knife was held to his neck. One 15-year-old, after being shot and
arrested, was deceived into signing a confession written in Hebrew
while still in the hospital, after officers convinced him it was an
approval form for his operation.

Khaled Quzmar, the DCI lawyer who represented Bara'a, describes the
timing and manner of most arrests as being sufficient grounds to
invalidate a confession. "Tens of soldiers surround the house at 1 or
2 in the morning and in most cases throw a sound bomb inside the house
in order to wake up everybody, and then they ask everybody to get out
of the house. This is the beginning of putting the child in the
frightening atmosphere of the interrogation. They tie his hands,
blindfold him and push him into the military jeep, where he sits
between soldiers who beat and kick him. He is sent directly to an
interrogation center without a lawyer or family member. He can wait up
to three months before seeing a lawyer. What they want the child to
feel is that nobody else in the world can help except their
confession."

Like the vast majority of Palestinian child prisoners, Bara'a and
Samah were detained in Israel, a practice in breach of the Geneva
Convention that requires occupying powers to detain residents within
occupied territories. As a consequence, many Palestinian children are
unable to be visited by family while in prison, because their
relatives are denied permits to enter Israel. The prisons are
overcrowded, have poor ventilation and poor access to natural light,
inadequate food and provide only meager medical and dental care.
Educational provision is close to nonexistent: a few hours of teaching
a week in a limited range of subjects, usually Arabic, English, Hebrew
and math. Geography, history, physics, chemistry and religion are all
banned for "security reasons."

The treatment of Palestinian children differs dramatically from that
of children on the other side of the separation wall. According to
Israeli law, the very definition of a child diverges across the
divide: until age 16 for a Palestinian but 18 for an Israeli, in line
with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, of which Israel is
a signatory. "They never arrest an Israeli child in the middle of the
night; they wait until the day. And then they ask the father by phone
to bring the child, and they interrogate the child with the father
there," says Quzmar. Israeli domestic law also requires that the
interrogation be video recorded.

The DCI report concludes, "Unless and until there is some level of
accountability for what amounts to serious breaches of the Fourth
Geneva Convention, the UN Convention Against Torture and the UN
Convention on the Rights of the Child, both at the domestic and
international level, the ill-treatment and torture of Palestinian
children at the hands of Israeli authorities will continue unchecked."

But while Israel has devastated Gazan society with an ongoing siege
since 2007, in part to pressure for Shalit's release, it has not
launched a single criminal investigation into interrogator abuse,
despite receiving more than 600 complaints of ill-treatment and
torture from 2001 to 2008. And while the Shalit video--the result of
concerted international diplomatic efforts--made headlines around the
world, Palestinian child prisoners like Bara'a remain nameless
terrorists, their stories too often left untold and their rights
repeatedly disregarded.

In August Sweden's largest daily newspaper published an article
containing grisly evidence suggesting that Israel had been taking
Palestinian internal organs. The article, by veteran photojournalist
Donald Bostrom, called for an international investigation to discover
the facts.1

Israel immediately accused Bostrom and the newspaper of "anti-
Semitism," and charged that suggesting Israelis could be involved in
the illicit removal of body parts constituted a modern "blood
libel" (medieval stories of Jews killing people for their blood).2

Numerous Israeli partisans repeated these accusations, including
Commentary's Jonathan Tobin, who asserted that the story was "merely
the tip of the iceberg in terms of European funded and promoted anti-
Israel hate."3 Others suggested that the newspaper was "irresponsible"
for running such an article.4

The fact is, however, that Israeli organ harvesting-sometimes with
Israeli governmental funding and the participation of high Israeli
officials, prominent Israeli physicians, and Israeli ministries-has
been documented for many years. Among the victims have been
Palestinians.

Nancy Scheper-Hughes is Chancellor's Professor of Medical Anthropology
at the University of California Berkeley, the founder of Organ Watch,
and the author of scholarly books and articles on organ trafficking.
She is the pundit mainstream media call upon when they need expert
commentary on the topic.5

While Scheper-Hughes emphasizes that traffickers and procurers come
from numerous nations and ethnicities, including Americans and Arabs,
she is unflinchingly honest in speaking about the Israeli connection:

"Israel is at the top," she states. "It has tentacles reaching out
worldwide."6

In a lecture last year sponsored by New York's PBS 13 Forum, Scheper-
Hughes explained that Israeli organ traffickers, "had and still have a
pyramid system at work that's awesome.they have brokers everywhere,
bank accounts everywhere; they've got recruiters, they've got
translators, they've got travel agents who set up the visas."

Lest this sound simply like a successful international concern, it's
important to understand the nature of such a business.

As Scheper-Hughes describes it, organ trafficking consists of "paying
the poor and the hungry to slowly dismantle their bodies."

Organ traffickers prey on the world's poorest, most desperate citizens-
slum dwellers, inhabitants of dying villages, people without means or
hope. Traffickers promise them what seem like astronomical sums of
money (from $1,000 to $10,000)-which they frequently don't even deliver
-in return for vital internal organs.

For traffickers, human body parts are commodities, to be cut out of
the bodies of the poor and sold to the rich. The organ "donors"
receive no follow-up care and end up worse off on many levels-
physically, financially, psychologically, socially-than even their
original tragic situation. Sometimes they are coerced into such
"donations."

Organ sales have been illegal in most countries for years. The United
Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, which covers
prevention, enforcement and sanctions in trafficking of humans,
includes in its definition of human exploitation the extraction of
organs for profit.7 Israel finally passed legislation against organ
trafficking in 2008.8, 9

In her Forum 13 lecture Scheper-Hughes discussed the two motivations
of Israeli traffickers. One was greed, she said. The other was
somewhat chilling: "Revenge, restitution-reparation for the
Holocaust."

She described speaking with Israeli brokers who told her "it's kind of
'an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. We're going to get every
single kidney and liver and heart that we can. The world owes it to
us.'"

Scheper-Hughes says that she "even heard doctors saying that."

For many years Israelis in need of an internal organ have gone on what
experts call "transplant tourism"-traveling to other nations to obtain
internal organs. Sometimes body parts are obtained from those freshly
dead; more often from the desperately needy. While affluent people
from numerous countries and ethnicities engage in this practice,
Israel is unique in several significant ways.

First, Israelis engage in this at an extraordinarily high rate.
According to a 2001 BBC report, Israelis buy more kidneys per capita
than any other population.

Second, Israelis have the lowest donor rate in the world-one-fifth
that of Europe, according to BBC. This is in part because there has
been a widespread impression that Jewish religious law prohibits
transplants as a "desecration of the body."10 The Israeli news service
Ynet reports, "the percentage of organs donated among Jews is the
lowest of all the ethnic groups."11

Third, the Israeli government has enabled the practice. For many years
the Israeli health system subsidized its citizens' "transplant
holidays," reimbursing Israelis $80,000 for medical operations abroad.
Much of the remaining costs could often be obtained from government-
subsidized12 Israeli insurance plans.13 In addition, Israel's Ministry
of Defense was directly involved.

Scheper-Hughes discussed Israeli organ trafficking in detail in 2001
in published testimony to the Subcommittee on International Relations
and Human Rights of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.14 In her
extensive testimony, Scheper-Hughes stated that although Israel had
become a pariah for its organ policies, Israeli officials exhibited
"amazing tolerance.toward outlawed 'transplant tourism.'"

She described an international syndicate which was "organized through
a local business corporation in conjunction with a leading transplant
surgeon, operating out of a major medical center not far from Tel
Aviv," and which had forged links with transplant surgeons in Turkey,
Russia, Moldavia, Estonia, Georgia, Romania, and New York City.

The Israeli Ministry of Defense was directly involved in what Scheper-
Hughes called Israel's "'illicit [in other nations] national 'program'
of transplant tourism.Members of the Ministry of Defense or those
closely related to them" accompanied transplant junkets.

In her Forum 13 lecture, Scheper-Hughes said that investigating
Israeli organ trafficking over the past decade had taken her "from
country to country to country to country."

One of these is Moldova, the poorest country in Europe-and homeland of
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman-where 90 percent of the
people earn less than $2 a day. A 2001 BBC report on organ trafficking
described the situation: "Hundreds of Israelis have created a
production line that starts in the villages of Moldova, where men
today are walking around with one kidney.15

Another is Brazil, where a legislative commission found that 30 [it
may actually have been as high as 60] Brazilians from impoverished
neighborhoods had sold their kidneys to a trafficking ring headed by
Israelis, with Israeli citizens receiving almost all of the organs,
and the Israeli government providing most of the funding.16

The ring had also begun inquiring about buying other vital organs from
poor residents, including lungs, livers and corneas.17

An Inter Press Service (IPS) news story from the time reported that
Scheper-Hughes testified to the commission that international
trafficking of human organs had begun some 12 years earlier, promoted
by Zaki Shapira, head of kidney transplant services at Bellinson
Medical Center, near Tel Aviv.

Scheper-Hughes reported that Shapira had performed more than 300
kidney transplants, sometimes accompanying his patients to other
countries such as Turkey. The recipients were very wealthy or had very
good health insurance, and the "donors" very poor people from Eastern
Europe, the Philippines and other developing countries.

The chairman of the Brazilian commission, physician Raimundo Pimentel,
was outraged at Israeli policies, pointing out that trafficking can
only take place on a large scale if there is a major source of
financing, such as the Israeli health system. Pimentel charged that
the resources provided by the Israeli health system "were a
determining factor" in enabling a network that preyed on society's
poorest populations.

In 2004 there were reports that Israeli traffickers had added China to
their target donor populations.18 In one recent case an Israeli paid
an organ broker $100,000 for a kidney transplant in China from an 18-
year-old Chinese girl. She received $5,000 and died following surgery.

New York Times reporter Larry Rohter pointed out that allowing brokers
to operate with few restrictions benefited Israel "by exporting
Israel's organ shortage overseas." Rohter cites a kidney specialist at
Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem who explained that patients who go
abroad "'save the country a lot of money; not only in terms of what
doesn't have to be spent on dialysis, but also by opening places for
other people who are on the list.'"20

Many people find governmental complicity in organ trafficking deeply
troubling on moral and philosophical grounds.

As Scheper-Hughes testified: "The sale of human organs and tissues
requires that certain disadvantaged individuals, populations, and even
nations have been reduced to the role of 'suppliers.'

"It is a scenario in which only certain bodies are broken,
dismembered, fragmented, transported, processed, and sold in the
interests of a more socially advantaged population...of receivers."
She believes that the risks and benefits of organ transplant surgery
should be more equally distributed among nations, ethnic groups, and
social classes.

Organ theft
It is difficult to know how often Israeli trafficking involves
outright theft of vital organs from living human beings.

It is not rare for the "donor" to receive little or none of the
compensation promised. For example, in 2007 Israel's Haaretz newspaper
reported that two Israelis had confessed to persuading Palestinians
"from the Galilee and central Israel who were developmentally
challenged or mentally ill to agree to have a kidney removed for
payment." According to the Haaretz report, after the organ had been
taken the traffickers refused to pay for them.

On occasion, people are coerced into giving up their organs. For
example, Levy Izhak Rosenbaum, the alleged Brooklyn trafficker
recently arrested in an FBI sweep in New Jersey, reportedly carried a
gun. When a potential organ seller would try to back out, Rosenbaum
would use his finger to simulate firing a gun at the person's head.

The Rosenbaum case, reportedly part of a ring centered in Israel, is
the first case of trafficking to be prosecuted in the US. His arrest
and the substantial evidence against him may have surprised State
Department Countermisinformation Director Todd Leventhal, who had
characterized organ trafficking as an "urban legend," stating, "It
would be impossible to successfully conceal a clandestine organ-
trafficking ring." Leventhal called such reports "irresponsible and
totally unsubstantiated."

More often organ theft involves dead bodies-or those alleged to be
dead.

Israel's very first successful heart transplant, in fact, used a
stolen heart.

In 1968 Avraham Sadegat unexpectedly died two days after being
hospitalized in Beilinson Hospital in Israel's Petah Tikva for a
stroke. When his family finally was able to retrieve his body (the
hospital initially refused to release it) they found his chest covered
with bandages; odd, they thought, for a stroke victim. Upon removing
these they discovered that the chest cavity was stuffed with bandages
and the heart was missing.21

During this time, the Israeli press was heralding the historic heart
transplant, performed by a team of surgeons who were to become some of
Israel's most celebrated physicians, among them Dr. Morris Levy, Dr.
Bernardo Vidne, and Dr Jack Solomon, who harvested the heart.22

When the family began to ask questions, the hospital denied any
connection. After the man's wife and brother had raised a media furor,
petitioned three cabinet ministers-and agreed to sign a document that
they would not sue-the hospital finally admitted it was Sadegat's
heart that had been used.

Haaretz quoted Sadegat's tearful wife: "They treated him like an alley
cat. From the moment he entered the hospital, they apparently saw him
only as a potential source of organs and not as a man in need of
treatment. They only thought about how to do the deed without us
knowing."

Sadegat's medical condition before his heart was removed has not been
made public. It is possible-perhaps probable-that up until his heart
was removed it was still beating; according to an Israeli media
report, "once a heart stops beating, it is no longer fit for
transplantation."23

Even if he was what is now termed "brain dead," the general view is
that family members should at least be a party to decisions regarding
the patient: first, whether to "pull the plug," and, second, whether
to donate an organ. At the time, however, Israeli law allowed organs
to be harvested without the family's consent.

Forty years later the hospital held an anniversary celebration of the
transplant, despite the fact that, according to Haaretz, the heart had
been obtained "through deceit and trickery." The festivities, which
honored surviving members of the transplant team, featured balloons
and a red, heart-shaped cake.

In this incident of organ theft (and from a possibly living body), the
family was Israeli. Had the wife and brother been Palestinians from
the West Bank or Gaza, they would not have possessed the power to
force a confession from the hospital, and it is likely that those
individuals today calling the Swedish article a "blood libel" or
"irresponsible journalism" would have applied the same epithets to
journalists reporting questions concerning the historic Israeli heart
transplant-if any reporters even bothered or dared to do so.

Yehuda Hiss, keeper of the morgue
Perhaps one of the most long-term and high-level cases of organ theft-
and one that involves Palestinian as well as Israeli organs-concerns
an extraordinarily high official: Dr. Yehuda Hiss, Israel's chief
pathologist and, from 1988 through 2004, director of Israel's state
morgue, the L. Greenberg Institute of Forensic Medicine at Abu Kabir.

An early indication of malfeasance came to light in 1998 and concerned
a Scottish man named Alisdair Sinclair, who had died under
questionable circumstances after being taken into custody at Israel's
Ben-Gurion Airport.

The Israeli story, as reported by the Israeli news magazine Jerusalem
Report, is that Sinclair had confessed to transporting drugs, even
though none were found, although he was in possession of 9,000 German
marks ($5,000). He then, the police claim, hanged himself by looping
his shoelaces and T-shirt around a towel bar about a meter off the
ground and slipped the improvised noose around his neck. From a
squatting position, the police story goes, he repeatedly threw his
bodyweight downward, choking himself.

Sinclair did not die, however, and medics were able to restore a
heartbeat. He was transferred to a hospital where, according to the
magazine report, the hospital's associate director, Dr. Yigal
Halperin, said that Sinclair "had suffered irreversible brain damage,
and there was little doctors could do for him. Left in a corner of the
emergency room, he died at 7 p.m. [It's unknown whether he had been
put on life support.] His corpse was transferred to the Institute for
Forensic Medicine at Abu Kabir for an autopsy."

Afterwards, Israeli authorities located Sinclair's family and gave
them three weeks to dispose of the body. They suggested that he be
buried in a Christian cemetery in Israel, pointing out that this would
be one-third the cost of shipping the body back to Scotland. However,
the grieving family scraped up the money to bring him home.

They had a second autopsy performed by Glasgow University, only to
discover that Sinclair's heart and a small bone in his throat called
the hyoid were missing. The British Embassy filed a complaint with
Israel, and a heart was sent to Scotland. According to the Jerusalem
Report, the family "wanted the Forensic Institute to pay for a DNA
test to confirm that this heart was indeed their brother's, but the
Institute's director, Prof. Jehuda Hiss, refused, citing the
prohibitive cost."

Despite a protest from the British government, Israel refused to
supply Hiss's pathology findings or the police report. According to
the British government and a report in the Israeli media, around the
time of Sinclair's death a doctor at Tel Aviv's Ichilov Hospital put
in a request for a hyoid bone for research purposes-and eventually
received a bill for shipping costs.24 Israel retained Sinclair's
$5,000.

Through the years Hiss and the Abu Kabir Institute of Forensic
medicine continued to be accused of organ theft. In 2000 the Israeli
newspaper Yediot Ahronot published an investigative report alleging
that Hiss had been extracting organs without permission and then
packing the bodies with broomsticks and cotton wool to fill in
cavities before burial. The report charged that under Hiss the
institute had been involved in organ sales of body parts-"legs,
thighs, ovaries, breasts and testicles," allegedly to medical
institutions.

In 2001 a district judge found the Institute had performed hundreds of
autopsies and had removed body parts without the families' permission-
and sometimes in direct opposition to their expressed wishes.25 One
report described a "museum of skulls" at the institute.

Little was done, however, and complaints continued-often by the
parents of dead Israeli soldiers horrified to discover that body parts
had been taken from their sons. Finally, in 2004 Israel's health
minister transferred directorship of the morgue itself away from Hiss.
Hiss, however, retained his position as Israel's chief pathologist, a
post it appears he holds to this day.26, 27

Hiss had also been connected with two previous national scandals, both
of which may have involved powerful people in Israel, which may
account for his longevity in Israel's medical establishment despite
years of proven wrongdoing.

The first controversy concerned the "Yemenite Children's Affair"-a
situation, largely from the early 1950s, in which a thousand babies
and small children of recent immigrants to Israel had "disappeared."

When the immigrants had arrived as part of Israel's "ingathering of
the exiles," babies were immediately taken from their mothers and
placed in children's houses. Many were hospitalized for a variety of
ills, and hundreds died, their deaths coming in such large numbers
that they were announced over loudspeakers.

The distraught parents often never saw the body or received a death
certificate, and there were growing suspicions that not all had died-
some, it was believed, had been "given" to Ashkenazi parents. One
author writes: "It was a well-known fact within the Jewish community
in the United States that if a family wanted a child they could go to
[baby brokers, both rabbis] and simply pay the necessary fee."28

Some Israeli investigators have found considerable evidence for these
charges, and indications of complicity at multiple levels of the power
structure. In fact, one researcher charges: "People in positions of
power at the time that the State of Israel was established profited
from the abduction and sale of children from poor immigrant
families."29

Hiss' connection comes in 1997, when Israel finally had formed a
committee to investigate the disappearance of Yemenite and other
Jewish children in the years 1948-1954. Among those testifying before
this committee was a California woman who had come to Israel searching
for her biological mother-and, according to DNA testing by a
geneticist at Hebrew University, had found her.

The committee demanded that another DNA test be conducted at the Abu
Kabir forensic institute. As at least one observer predicted ahead of
time, Hiss's test came up negative, and the government was allegedly
exonerated, despite the fact that the geneticist who had conducted the
first tests stood by his results.30

Hiss also plays a role in some conspiracy theories regarding the 1995
assassination of Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin, who had begun a peace
process with Palestinians. In March 1999 a group of academics
presented findings alleging that Hiss had submitted false evidence to
the commission that investigated the killing.31

Palestinian Victims
Israelis have also targeted Palestinians, a particularly vulnerable
population on numerous levels.

In her congressional subcommittee testimony, Scheper-Hughes reported
that before he moved overseas, Israeli hospital transplant head Zaki
Shapira had located kidney sellers "amongst strapped Palestinian
workers in Gaza and the West Bank." She said that his "hand was
slapped by an ethics board," and he moved his practice overseas.

For decades numerous Palestinians and others have charged Israel with
taking body parts from Palestinians they had wounded or killed.

In her subcommittee testimony, Scheper-Hughes testified that toward
the end of the apartheid period in South Africa, "human rights groups
in the West Bank complained to me of tissue and organs stealing of
slain Palestinians by Israeli pathologists at the national Israeli
legal medical institute in Tel Aviv."

A Washington Report for Middle East Affairs article by Mary Barrett
(see "Autopsies and Executions," April 1990 Washington Report, p. 21)
reported "widespread anxiety over organ thefts which has gripped Gaza
and the West Bank since the intifada began in December of 1987."

Barrett quotes a forensic physician: "There are indications that for
one reason or another, organs, especially eyes and kidneys, were
removed from the bodies during the first year or year and a half.
There were just too many reports by credible people for there to be
nothing happening. If someone is shot in the head and comes home in a
plastic bag without internal organs, what will people assume?"

A 2002 news story from IRNA reported that three Palestinian boys aged
14-15 had been killed by Israeli forces on Dec. 30, their bodies
finally being returned for burial on Jan. 6. According to the report:
"shortly before burial, Palestinian medical authorities examined the
bodies and found out that the main vital organs were missing from the
bodies." In an interview on Al Jazeera, President Yasser Arafat held
up photos of the boys, saying, "They murder our kids and use their
organs as spare parts."

Journalist Khalid Amayreh, recently investigating this topic further,
found that "several other Palestinians gave a similar narrative,
recounting how they received the bodies of their murdered relatives,
mostly men in their early twenties, with vital organs taken away by
the Israeli authorities."

Israel has consistently characterized such accusations as "anti-
Semitic," and numerous other journalists have discounted them as
exaggerations.

However, according to the pro-Israel Forward magazine, the truth of
these charges was, in fact, confirmed by an Israeli governmental
investigation a number of years ago.

In a recent story critical of the Swedish article, the Forward
actually confirmed its main point, that Israel had been taking the
body parts of slain Palestinians. The Forward article reported that
one of the governmental investigations into Hiss had revealed that "he
seemed to view every body that ended up in his morgue, whether Israeli
or Palestinian, as fair game for organ harvesting."32

Over the years, a great many Palestinian bodies have "ended up" in the
Israeli morgue. In numerous cases Israeli occupation forces have taken
custody of wounded or dead Palestinians. Sometimes their bodies are
never returned to their grieving families-Palestinian NGOs say there
are at least 250 such cases.

In other cases the bodies have been returned to the families days
later, with crudely stitched naval-to-chin incisions. On many
occasions Israeli soldiers have delivered the bodies late at night and
required the bereaved families to bury their children, husbands, and
brothers immediately, under Israeli military guard, sometimes with the
electricity shut off.

In 2005 an Israeli soldier33 described a military doctor who gave
"medics lessons in anatomy" using the bodies of Palestinians killed by
Israeli forces. Haaretz reports: "The soldier said that the
Palestinian's body had been riddled with bullets and that some of his
internal organs had spilled out. The doctor pronounced the man dead
and then 'took out a knife and began to cut off parts of the body,'
the soldier said.

"'He explained the various parts to us-the membrane that covers the
lungs, the layers of the skin, the liver, stuff like that,' the
soldier continued. 'I didn't say anything because I was still new in
the army. Two of the medics moved away, and one of them threw up. It
was all done very brutally. It was simply contempt for the body.'"34

While most Israeli investigations into organ theft have largely
ignored the Palestinian component, a number of significant facts are
known:

Palestinian organs were harvested during years of an astonishingly lax
system in which the body parts even of Jewish Israelis were extracted
illicitly at the national morgue by the chief pathologist and
exchanged for money.
Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza are largely a captive
population. Numerous reports by highly reputable Israeli and
international organizations have documented a situation in which
Palestinians have few if any real rights; Israeli forces have killed
civilians with impunity, imprisoned massive numbers of people without
benefit of trials, and routinely abused prisoners.
Israeli authorities have conducted numerous autopsies of Palestinians
without permission of their families, without even a semblance of
public transparency, and without, it appears, accompanying reports.
For example, the families of those who were taken while still alive
are not provided with a medical report stating time and cause of
death.
A very small but significant minority of Israelis, including military
officers and governmental ministers, hold extremist supremacist views
relevant to organ extraction. In 1996, Jewish Week reported that Rabbi
Yitzhak Ginsburgh, a leader of the Lubavitch sect of Judaism and the
dean of a religious Jewish school in a West Bank settlement, stated:
"If a Jew needs a liver, can you take the liver of an innocent non-Jew
passing by to save him? The Torah would probably permit that."
Ginzburgh elaborated: "Jewish life has infinite value. There is
something infinitely more holy and unique about Jewish life than non-
Jewish life." [The Jewish Week, April 26, 1996, pp. 12, 31]
While most Israelis strenuously repudiate such beliefs, Rabbi Moshe
Greenberg, an Israeli scholar on Jewish scriptural views on racism and
ethnic chauvinism, has said, "The sad thing is, these statements are
in our books." Greenberg, who was a professor at Hebrew University,
pointed out that such Talmudic texts were "purely theoretical" at the
time of their writing, because Jews did not have the power to carry
them out. Now, he pointed out, "they're carried over into
circumstances where Jews have a state and are empowered."

While it is impossible to know whether any Israelis have ever acted on
such religious permission to kill a non-Jew in order to provide body
parts to Jews, some observers have considered this a possibility.

Dr. A. Clare Brandabur, a distinguished American scholar who has lived
and traveled extensively in Palestine, writes that the information
published in the Swedish article "resonates with reports from
Palestinians in Gaza which I heard during the first intifada."

She comments, "When I interviewed Dr. Haidar Abdul Shafi, head of the
Red Crescent in Gaza, I mentioned to him reports of shootings of
Palestinian children at times when there were no 'clashes' going on-a
solitary 6-year-old entering his schoolyard in the morning with his
bookbag on his back. The soldiers abducted the wounded child at
gunpoint, then his body would be returned a few days later having
undergone an 'autopsy at Abu Kabir Hospital.'"

She says: "I asked Dr. Shafi if he had considered the possibility that
these killings were being done for organ transplant, since (as Israel
Shahak notes in Jewish History, Jewish Religion), it is not allowed to
take Jewish organs to save a Jewish life, but it is allowed to take
the organs of non-Jews to save Jewish lives. Dr. Shafi said he had
suspected such things but since they had no access to the records of
Abu Kabir Hospital, there was no way to verify these suspicions."

Scheper-Hughes, in her congressional testimony, describes the danger
of "organs got by any means possible including (I was told by one
guilt-ridden practitioner) chemically inducing the signs of brain
death in dying patients of no means and with access to minimal social
support or family surveillance."

Whether or not there have ever been organ-inspired murders in Israel
as it appears there have elsewhere, numerous groups around the world
are urging an international investigation into Israel's handling of
Palestinian bodies in its custody.

However, the Israeli government and its powerful advocates abroad, who
regularly block investigations into Israeli actions, are doing their
utmost to prevent this one.35, 36 Several lawsuits have been filed
against the Swedish newspaper, the largest by Israeli lawyer and IDF
officer Guy Ophir, who filed a $7.5 million lawsuit in New York
against the newspaper and Bostrom. Ophir declared that Israel must
"silence the reporter and the newspaper."37

International investigations, of course, have two results: the
innocent are absolved, the guilty discovered.

It is clear which category Israel believes it falls into.

Jewish Ritual Murder in England Before 1290

The first known case occurred in 1144; after that, cases cropped up
from time to time until the Jews were expelled from the realm by Edward I.
The most famous of these incidents was that of Little St. Hugh of Lincoln in
1255. I record these cases in chronological order; and I do not deny the
possibility that some of them, in which details are lacking, were "trumped
up" ones, where death may have been due to causes other than ritual murder
and the Jews blamed for it; but the case of St. Hugh, particularly, was
juridically decided, and the Close and Patent Rolls of the Realm record
definitely cases at London, Winchester and Oxford. There seems no reason to
doubt that many cases of ritual murder have been unsuspected and even
undiscovered.

1144, Norwich. A twelve year-old boy was crucified and his side
pierced at the Jewish Passover. His body was found in a sack hidden in a
tree. A converted Jew, called Theobald of Cambridge, confessed that the Jews
took blood every year from a Christian child because they thought that only
by so doing could they ever obtain their freedom and return to Palestine;
and that it was their custom to draw lots to decide whence the blood was to
be supplied; Theobald said that last year the lot fell to Narbonne, but in
this year to Norwich. The boy was locally beatified and has ever since been
known as St. William. The Sheriff, probably bribed, refused to bring the
Jews to trial.

In J. C. Cox's Norfolk Churches, vol. II, p. 47, as also in the
Victoria County History of Norfolk, 1906, vol.. II, is an illustration of an
old painted rood-screen depicting the ritual murder of St. William; the
screen itself is in Loddon Church, Norfolk, unless the power of Jewish money
has had it removed. No-one denies this case as a historical event, but the
Jews of course say it was not a ritual murder. The Jew, C. Roth, in his The
Ritual Murder Libel and the Jew (1935) says: "Modern enquirers, after
careful examination of the facts, have concluded that the child probably
lost consciousness in consequence of a cataleptic fit, and was buried
prematurely by his relatives." How these modern enquirers arrived at a
conclusion like that after all these years, Mr. Roth does not say; nor is it
a compliment to the Church to suggest that its ministers would allow the
boy's death to be celebrated as the martyrdom of a saint without having
satisfied themselves that wounds on the body confirmed the crucifixion and
piercing of the side. And why the relatives should bury the boy in a sack
and then dig it up and hang it in a tree would puzzle even a Jew to explain.

John Foxe's Acts and Monuments of the Church records this ritual
murder, as did the Ballandists and other historians. The Prior, William
Turbe, who afterwards became Bishop of Norwich, was the leading light in
insisting that the crime was one of Jewish ritual murder; in the Dictionary
of National Biography (edited by a Jew!) it is made clear that his career,
quite apart from this ritual murder case, is that of a man of great strength
of character and moral courage.

1160, Gloucester. The body of a child named Harold was found in the
river with the usual wounds of crucifixion. Sometimes wrongly dated 1168.

Polychronicon, R. Higdon; Chronicles, R. Grafton, p. 46.)

1181, Bury St. Edmunds. A child called Robert was sacrificed at
Passover. The child was buried in the church and its presence there was
supposed to cause miracles. (Authority: Rohrbacher, from the Chronicle of

1192, Winchester. A boy crucified. Mentioned in the Jewish
Encyclopaedia as being a false charge. Details lacking.

1232, Winchester. Boy crucified. Details lacking. (Mentioned in
Hyamson's History of the Jews in England; also in Annals of Winchester; and
conclusively in the Close Roll 16, Henry III, m.8, 26.6.1232.)

1235, Norwich. In this case, Jews stole a child and hid him with a
view to crucifying him. Haydn's Dictionary of Dates of date 1847, says of
this case, "They [the Jews] circumcise and attempt to crucify a child at
Norwich; the offenders are condemned in a fine of 20,000 marks." (Further
authority Huillard Breolles, Grande Chronique, III, 86; also Close Roll, 19
Henry III, m.23.)

1244, London. A child's body found unburied in the cemetery of St.
Benedict, with ritual cuts. Buried with great pomp in St. Paul's.

1255, Lincoln. A boy called Hugh was kidnapped by the Jews and
crucified and tortured in hatred of Jesus Christ. The boy's mother found the
body in a well on the premises of a Jew called Jopin or Copinus. This Jew,
promised by the judge his life if he confessed, did so, and 91 Jews were
arrested; eventually 18 were hanged for the crime. King Henry III himself
personally ordered the juridical investigation of the case five weeks after
the discovery of the body, and refused to allow mercy to be shown to the Jew
Copinus, who was executed.

Hugh was locally beatified, and his tomb may still be seen in Lincoln
Cathedral, but the Jewish Money Power has evidently been at work, for
between 1910 and 1930 a notice was fixed above the shrine as follows: "The
body of Hugh was given burial in the Cathedral and treated as that of a
martyr. When the Minster was repaved, the skeleton of a small child was
found beneath the present tombstone. There are many incidents in the story
which tend to throw doubt upon it, and the existence of similar stories in
England and elsewhere points to their origin in the fanatical hatred of the
Jews of the Middle Ages and the common superstition, now wholly discredited,
that ritual murder was a factor of Jewish Paschal Rites. Attempts were made
as early as the 13th century by the Church to protect the Jews against the
hatred of the populace and against this particular accusation."

At a visit to Lincoln of the Jewish Historical Society, in 1934, the
Mayor, Mr. G. Deer, said to them: "That he [St. Hugh] was done to death by
Jews for ritual purposes cannot be other than a libel based upon the
prejudices and ignorance of an unenlightened age." The Chancellor on the
same occasion said: "It was quite obviously one of the very many cases of
slander spread about the Jews from time to time. No doubt, the child died or
fell down the well."

These people, Jews and Gentiles, bring no evidence whatever for their
statement; it couldn't have happened, they say. Why not?

Was Henry III, weak in character as we know him to have been, ever
charged with being an immoral man? Did the judges not examine the body,
which was only four weeks dead? Is Haydn's Dictionary of Dates (1847
edition) medieval and superstitious when it said of this case "They [the
Jews] crucify a child at Lincoln, for which eighteen are hanged"? There are
no 'ifs' and 'buts' here! Or does Copinus's confession not tally with that
of Theobald, quoted above in the first Norwich case? Copinus said, "For the
death of this child, nearly all the Jews in England had come together and
every town had sent deputies to assist in the sacrifice."

No-one questions the historical facts in this case; but Jews and
Judaized Gentiles alike unite in denying the fact of ritual murder.

Strack, in his The Jew and Human Sacrifice, written in defence of the
Jews against the Blood Accusation, omits all mention of this famous case,
which is the subject of the Prioress's Tale in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales
and is referred to in Marlowe's Jew of Malta. Hyamson's History of the Jews
in England devotes the whole of Chapter IX to "Little St. Hugh of Lincoln,"
showing the importance of the ritual murder issue in the Jewish mind today.
(The following Close Rolls of the Realm refer to the case of St. Hugh: Henry
III, 39, m.2, 7.10.1255; 39, m.2, 14.10.1255; 40, m.20, 24.11.1255; 40,
m.13, 13.3.1256; 42, m.6, 19.6.1258. And the Patent Rolls, Henry III, 40,

1279, Northampton. A child crucified. Haydn's Dictionary of Dates,
1847, says of this case: "They [the Jews] crucify a child at Northampton for
which fifty are drawn at horses' tails and hanged." (Further authorities:

1290, Oxford. The Patent Roll 18 Edward I, m.21, 21st June 1290,
contains an order for the gaol delivery of a Jew, Isaac de Pulet, detained
for the murder of a Christian boy at Oxford.

Only one month after this, King Edward issued his decree expelling the
Jews from the Kingdom. There is, then, every reason to believe that it was
the Oxford murder which proved the last straw in toleration.

A similar ritual case was one of the main stimulants to the King and
Queen of Spain to expel professing Jews from that country in 1492 (Leese:
Jewish Ritual Murder, p. 20).

The Jews, in attempting to escape responsibility for these deaths by
ritual murder, do not hesitate to impugn the probity of two of the Kings of
England, against whose moral character no-one else has dared to cast a slur.
Here are some examples. Firstly the Jew Hyamson (in History of the Jews in
England, 1928 edition, p. 21) wrote: "It has also been pointed out that the
Blood Accusation was as a rule made at a time at which the Royal Treasury
needed replenishing." This foul accusation against men of upright character
was repeated in the Jewish Chronicle Supplement, April 1936, p. 8 (speaking
of the Lincoln case in the reign of Henry III): "Henceforth and especially
under the zealously Christian Edward I, the Crown and its officers became
almost a worse peril to the Jews than mobs intent on loot and led on by
fanatic priests and knightly spendthrifts who had borrowed Jewish money.
When 18th century writers of history began to examine the old records in a
new sceptical temper some may be found venturing on such unkind surmises as
that the alleged crucifixions of Christian children only seemed to happen
when kings were short of money."

To deny that the cases of St. William of Norwich and St. Hugh of
Lincoln were Jewish ritual murders is to accuse certain English Kings,
certain English Clergy, and certain English administrators, known to be men
of good morals, of murdering and torturing Jews to get their money, after
accusing them of horrible crimes. In the case of St. Hugh, the sentence was
juridical; in the case of St. William, the mob took the matter into their
own hands because the Sheriff would take no action himself.

Whom do you believe - the Jews or the English?

"It is difficult to refuse all credit to stories so circumstantial and
so frequent." So says Social England concerning ritual murders in England
(vol. I, p. 407, 1893, edited by H. D. Traill).

A significant fact is that Haydn's Dictionary of Dates, at least up to
1847, quoted the ritual murders in Norman and Plantagenet England as
undisputed facts. In later editions in the sixties, all mention of them is
extirpated! We may take it that the Jewish Money Power began to dictate to
the Press in England somewhere in the fifties of the last century.

2000 YEARS OF TERROR
THE COMPILATION OF JEWISH RITUAL MURDERS FROM BEFORE THE TIME OF
CHRIST UNTIL 1932

The earliest of historians, Herodotus, informs us about the Hebrew
cult of human sacrifice. He writes: "The Hebrews sacrificed humans to
their God Moloch." (Herodotus, Vol. II, p. 45) Christ said to the
Jews: "Your father was a murderer from the beginning." (John 8:44) By
this he meant Moloch-Yahweh, the supreme Jewish Devil-God. Also, the
prophets Isaiah (57:5), Jeremiah (7:30- 31), Ezekiel (26:26-30), and
Micah (6:7) reproached the Jews for their abominable offerings. Isaiah
said:

"You enflame yourselves with idols under every green tree, slaying the
children in the valleys under the cliffs of the rocks!"

The ritual murders that have been passed down through writings since
before the time of Christ until today are:

169 B.C. -- "King Antiochus Epiphanes of Syria, during the plundering
of the Temple of Jerusalem, found a Greek lying on a bed in a secret
chamber. He begged the King to rescue him. When he began to beg, the
attendants told him that a secret law commanded the Jews to sacrifice
human beings at a certain time annually. They therefore searched for a
stranger which they could get in their power. They fattened him, led
him into the woods, sacrificed him, ate some of his flesh, drank some
of his blood, and threw the remains of his body into a
ditch." (Josephus, Jewish historian, Contra Apionem)

418 A.D. -- Baronius reports the crucifixion of a boy by the Jews at
Imm, between Aleppo and Antioch.

419 A.D. -- In the Syrian district of Imnestar, between Chalcis and
Antioch, the Jews tied a Christian boy to a cross on a holiday and
flogged him to death. (Socrat)

425 A.D. -- Baronius reports the crucifixion of a boy.

614 A.D. -- After the conquest of Jerusalem, the Jews purchased, for a
small amount of money, 90,000 prisoners from the Persian King Chosros
II and murdered them all in the most disgusting ways. (Cluverius,
Epitome his. p. 386)

1071 A.D. -- Several Jews from Blois crucified a child during the
Easter celebration, put his body into a sack and threw it into the
Loire. Count Theobald had the guilty ones burned alive. (Robert of
Mons, Mon. Germ. hist. Script VI 520)

1144 A.D. -- In Norwich, during Passover, 12-year-old St. William was
tied by the local Jews, hanged from a cross, and his blood drained
from a wound in his side. The Jews hid the corpse in the nearby woods.
They were surprised by a local citizen, Eilverdus, who was bribed with
money to keep quiet. Despite this the crime still became notorious.

1160 A.D. -- The Jews of Gloucester crucified a child (Mons Germ.
hist. Script 520)

1179 A.D. -- In Pontoise, on March 25th before Passover, the Jews
butchered and drained St. Richard's body of blood. Due to this, the
Jews were expelled from France. (Rob. of Turn., Rig.u.Guillel. Amor.)

1181 A.D. -- In London, around Easter, near the church of St. Edmund,
the Jews murdered a child by the name of Roertus. (Acta sanct, III
March Vol., 591)

1181 A.D. -- In Saragossa, the Jews murdered a child named Dominico.
(Blanca Hispania illustrata, tom. III, p. 657)

1191 A.D. -- The Jews of Braisme crucified a Christian who had accused
them of robbery and murder, after they had previously dragged him
through the town. Due to this King Philip Augustus, who had personally
come to Braisme, burned eighty of them. (rigordus, Hist. Gall.)

1220 A.D. -- In Weissenburg, in Alsace, on the 29th of June, the Jews
murdered a boy, St. Heinrich. (Murer, Helvetia sancta.)

1225 A.D. -- In Munich a woman, enticed by Jewish gold, stole a small
child from her neighbor. The Jews drained the blood from the child.
Caught in her second attempt, the criminal was handed over to the
courts. (Meichelbeck, Hist. Bavariae II. 94)

1235 A.D. -- the Jews committed the same crime on December 1st in
Erfut. (Henri Desportes, Le mystere du sang, 66)

1236 A.D. -- In Hagenau in Alsace, three Christian boys from the
region of Fulda were attacked by the Jews in a mill during the night
and killed in order to obtain their blood. (Trithemius; Chronicle of
Albert of Strassburg)

1239 A.D. -- A general uprising in London because of a murder
committed secretly by the Jews. (Matthew v. Paris, Grande Chron.)

1240 A.D. -- In Norwich the Jews circumcised a Christian child and
kept him hidden in the ghetto in order to crucify him later. After a
long search, the father found his child and reported it to the Bishop
Wilhelm of Rete. (Matthew v. Paris, op. cit. V. 39)

1244 A.D. -- In St. Benedict's churchyard in London, the corpse of a
boy was found which bore cuts and scratches and, in several places,
Hebrew characters. He had been tortured and killed; and his blood had
been drained. Baptized Jews, forced to interpret the Hebrew signs,
found the name of the child's parents and read that the child had been
sold to the Jews when it was very young. Distinguished Jews left the

everyone who deliverd a Christian child for sacrifice would be freed
from all taxes and debts. In June, 1250, Moses Albay-Huzet (Also
called Albajucetto) delivered the 7-year-old Dominico del Val to the

1255 A.D. -- At Lincoln, in England, on Peter and Paul's Day, 8-year-
old St. Hugh was stolen by the local Jews, hidden, and later

1257 A.D. --So that they could commit their annual sacrifice, the Jews

1293 A.D. -- In Krems, the Jews sacrificed a child. Two of the
murderers were punished; the others saved themselves through the power

1302 A.D. -- In Reneken the same crime. (Ann. Colm. II, 32)

1303 A.D. -- At Weissensee in Thuringen the young student Conrad, the
son of a soldier, was killed at Easter. His muscles were cut to pieces
and his veins were opened in order to drain all his blood.

1305 A.D. -- In Prague, around Easter, a Christian, who was forced by
poverty to work for the Jews, was nailed to a cross; while naked, he
was beaten with rods and spat on in the face. (Tentzel)

1320 A.D. -- In Puy, a choirboy of the local church was sacrificed.

1321 A.D. --In Annecy a young priest was killed. The Jews were
expelled from the town by a decree of King Phillip V. (Denis de Saint-

1331 A.D. -- At Uberlingen in present-day Baden the Jews threw the son
of a citizen named Frey into a well. The incisions found later on the
body proved that previous to this his blood had been drained. (Joh.

1338 A.D. - The Jews butchered a noble from Franconia in Munich. His
brother prepared a veritable bloodbath for the Jews. (Henri Desport)

1345 A.D. -- In Munich, the Jews opened the veins of a little boy
Heinrich, and stabbed him more than 60 times. The church canonized

1347 A.D. -- In Messina a child was crucified on Good Friday. (Henri

1349 A.D. --The Jews wanted to attack and kill Christians assembled in
their church at Rothenburg. A Jew's maidservant exposed the Jewish
murder plot, and the Christians stormed out of their church and killed

1350 A.D. --The boy Johannes, a student of the monastic school of St.
Sigbert in Cologne, drew his last breath after being stabbed by local

1380 A.D. -- At Hagenbach in Swabia several Jews were surprised while
butchering a Christian child. (Martin Crusius, Yearbook of Swabia,

1401 A.D. --At Diessenhofen in Switzerland (near Schaffhausen),
4-year-
old Conrad Lory was murdered. His blood was said to have been sold by
the groom Johann Zahn for 3 florins to the Jew Michael Vitelman. (Acta

1407 A.D. --The Jews were expelled from Switzerland because of a
similar crime in the same region. (ibid.)

1410 A.D. -- In Thuringia the Jews were driven out because of ritual
murder that was discovered. (Boll. II, April 838. Baronius 31)

1429 A.D. -- At Ravensburg in Wurttemberg, Ludwig van Bruck, a
Christian boy from Switzerland who was studying in the town and living
among the Jews, was martyred by 3 Jews amid numerous tortures and
sexual violations. This happened during a big Jewish festival
(Passover) between Easter and Whitsun. (Baron. 31, Acta sancta. III.
Bd. des April p. 978)

1440 A.D. -- A Jewish doctor in Pavia, Simon of Ancona, beheaded a
four- year-old child which was stolen and brought to him by a
degenerate Christian. The crime became notorious when a dog jumped out
of a window into the street with the child's head. The murderer

1452 A.D. -- In Savona, several Jews killed a 2-year-old Christian
child. They pierced his whole body and collected the blood in the
vessel they used for the circumcision of their children. the Jews
dripped small pieces of sliced fruit into the blood and enjoyed a meal

1453 A.D. -- In Breslau, the Jews stole a child, fattened him and put
him in a barrel lined with nails, which they rolled back and forth in
order to draw the child's blood. (Henri Desportes, Le mystere du sang,

1454 A.D. -- On the estates of Louis of Almanza in Castile, two Jews
killed a Christian boy. They tore out his heart and burned it; threw
the ashes into wine which they drank with their co-religionists. By
spending considerable sums they succeeded in delaying the trial, since
two of the three lawyers were of Jewish descent. Thereafter the Jews

1462 A.D. -- In a birchwood at Rinn near Innsbruck the boy Andreas
Oxner was sold to the Jews and sacrificed. The church canonized him. A
chapel called "Zum Judenstein" ('To the Jews' Rock') was built. (Acta

1468 A.D. -- At Sepulveda, in Old Castile, the Jews crucified a
Christian woman on Good Friday upon the order of the Rabbi Solomon

1470 A.D. --In Baden the Jews were convicted of the murder of a
Christian child. (Tho. Patr. Barbar.)

1475 A.D. -- In Trent on March 23rd (Maundy Thursday) before Passover,
the Jews sacrificed a 29-month-old baby, St. Simon.

1476 A.D. -- The Jews in Regensburg murdered six children. The judge,
in the underground vault of a Jew named Josfol, found the remains of
the murdered victims as well as a stone bowl speckled with blood on a

1480 A.D. -- In Treviso, a crime similar to the one in Trent was
committed: the murder of the canonized Sebastiano of Porto-Buffole

1494 A.D. -- At Tyrnau in Hungary, 12 Jews seized a Christian boy,
opened his veins, and carefully collected his blood. They drank some

1503 A.D. -- In Langendenzlingen a father handed his 4-year-old child
over to two Jews from Waldkirchen in Baden for 10 florins under the
condition that he would be returned alive after a small amount of
blood had been drained. However, they drained so much blood from the

1505 A.D. -- A crime, similar to the one in Langendenzlingen in 1503,
was attempted at Budweis in Bohemia. (Henri Desportes, Le mystere du

1509 A.D -- Several Jews profaned the host brought from a sanctuary
dealer and murdered several Christian children. (Cluverius, Epitome
hist. etc. p. 579)

1509 A.D. --The Jews in Bosingen (Hungary) kidnapped the child of a
wheelwright, dragged him to the cellar, tortured him horribly, opened
all his veins and sucked out the blood with quills. Afterwards they
threw his body in a hedge, which the Jews admitted after repeated
denials. (Ziegler Schonplatz p. 588, col. 1,2)

1510 A.D. -- In Berlin, the Jews Salomon, Jacob, Aaron, Levi Isaac,
Rabbi Mosch and the butcher Jacob were accused of buying a three- or
four-year-old Christian boy for 10 florins from a stranger, laying him
on a table in a cellar, and puncturing him with needles in the large
blood-rich veins until he was finally slaughtered by the butcher
Jacob. An enormous trial began, and eventually a hundred Jews were
locked in the Berlin prison. They partially admitted to having bought
Christian children from strangers, stabbing them, draining their
blood, and drinking the blood in case of illness or preserving it with
tomatoes, ginger, and honey. No fewer than 41 of the accused Jews were
sentenced to death-by-burning after their confession. All the other

1520 A.D. -- The Jews in Hungary repeated the crime of 1494 by
murdering a Christian child in Tyrnau and Biring, and draining its
blood. (Acta sancta II. Bd. d. April p. 839)

1525 A.D. -- A ritual murder in Budapest caused a widespread anti-
Semitic movement among the population. In this year the Jews were
expelled from Hungary (Henry Desportes, Le mystere du sang 81)

1540 A.D. -- At Sappenfeld in Bavaria, 4-year-old michael Pisenharter
was kidnapped from his father before Easter and taken to Titting
(North of Ingolstadt), where he suffered the most horrible tortures
for three days, his veins were opened and his blood drained. The
corpse showed signs of a crucifixion. The blood was found in Posingen.

1547 A.D. -- At Rava in Poland 2 Jews stole a tailor's boy named
Michael and crucified him. (Acta sancta II. Bd. April p. 839)

1569 A.D. --In Vitov (Poland) Johann, the 2-year-old son of the widow
Kozmianina, was savagely murdered by Jacob, a Jew of Leipzig. (Acta

1571 A.D. -- M.A. Bradaginus was butchered by the Jews. (Seb. Munster,
Cosmographia)

1571 A.D. -- Joachim II, Elector of Brandenburg, was poisoned by a Jew
with whom he had a trusting association. (Scheidanus X. Buch. seiner
Hist. pag. 60)

1573 A.D. -- In Berlin a child who had been purchased from a beggar
was tortured to death by a Jew. (Sartorious p. 53)

1574 A.D. -- At Punia in Latvia, the Jew Joachim Smierlowitz killed a
7- year-old girl called Elizabeth shortly before Passover. An
inscription and a painting in the Chapel of the Holy Cross at Wilna
proves that the child's blood was mixed with flour which was used in
the preparation of Easter cakes. At about this time a Christian boy in
Zglobice was stolen and taken to Tarnow, where another Christian boy
was found in the hands of the Jews under suspicious circumstances:

1575 A.D. --The Jews killed a child, Michael of Jacobi. (Desportes)
1586 A.D. --In a series of cases Christian children were snatched away
from their parents and killed; by breaking down these crimes, Rupert

1592 A.D. -- At Wilna, a 7-year-old Christian boy, Simon, was horribly
tortured to death by the Jews. More than 170 wounds, made by knives
and scissors, were found on his body, besides the numerous cuts under

1595 A.D. -- At Costyn in Posen a child was tortured to death by the
Jews. (Acta sancta 389)

1597 A.D. -- In Szydlov the blood of a child was used in the
consecration of a new synagogue. They eyelids, neck, veins, limbs, and
even the sexual organs of the child showed countless punctures. (Acta

1598 A.D. -- In the village of Wodznick, in the Polish province of
Podolia, the 4-year-old Roman Catholic son of a farmer was stolen by
two young Jews and butchered four days before the Jewish Passover by
the most horrible tortures in which the most respected Jews of the

1650 A.D. -- At Kaaden in Steiermark, 5œ-year-old Mathias Tillich was
butchered by a Jew on March 11th. (Tentzel)

1655 A.D. -- At Tunguch in Lower Germany the Jews murdered a Christian
child for their Easter celebration. (Tentzel, monatl. Unterred. v.
Juli 1693 p. 553)

1665 A.D. --In Vienna the Jews butchered a woman on the 12th of May in
the most dreadful way. The corpse was found in a pond in a sack
weighted with stones. It was completely covered with wounds,
decapitated and the legs were cut off below the knees. (H.A. von

1669 A.D. -- On the way from Metz to Boulay, near the village of
Glatigny, on Sept. 22nd, a 3-year-old child was stolen from his mother
by the Jew Raphael Levy. He was horribly butchered. His body was found
viciously mutilated. The murderer was burned alive on Jan. 17th in

1675 A.D. -- At Miess in Bohemia a 4-year-old Christian child was
murdered by the Jews on March 12th. (Acta sancta II. Bd. des April)

1684 A.D. -- In the village of Grodno, Minsk government in Russia, the
Jew Schulka stole the 6-year-old Christian boy Gabriel and carried him
to Bialystock where, in the presence of several Jews, he was tortured
to death and his blood drained. (Records of the magistrate at

1753 A.D. -- On Good Friday, the 20th of April, in a village near Kiev
(Russia), the 3œ-year-old son of the nobleman Studzinski was kidnapped
by the Jews, hidden in a tavern until the end of the Sabbath, and then
monstrously sacrificed with the help of the Rabbi Schmaja. The blood

1764 A.D. --The 10-year-old son of Johann Balla, who had disappeared
on the 19th of June from Orkul (Hungary), was found in a neighboring

1791 A.D. -- On the 21st of February, the corpse of 13-year-old
Andreas Takals, who lived with a Jew named Abraham, was found outside
a village near Tasnad (Siebenburgen). The blood had been drained from

1791 A.D. -- At the same time two blood murders were reported at
Holleschau (Moravia) and at Woplawicz in the District of Duplin.

1791 A.D. -- During the reign of Sultan Selim III, the Jews in Pera
killed a young Greek by hanging him from a tree by his legs. (Henri

1803 A.D. -- On March 10th, the 72-year-old Jew Hirsch from Sugenheim
seized a 2-year-old child between Ullstadt and Lengenfeld in Buchof
near Nuremberg. Several days later the Jew denied having been in
Buchhof at all on March 10th. The father of the child, who wanted to
prove the contrary with witnesses, was rebuffed in court with threats
and insults. On the 12th day the child was found dead, his tongue
sliced and his mouth full of blood. The Jews besieged the district
governor of Newstadt at that time until the matter turned out to their
satisfaction. The father was forced under threats to sign a protocol,
to which it attested that the child, still warm when he was found, had

1804 A.D. -- In Grafenberg near Nuremberg a 2 to 3-year-old boy was
kidnapped by an old Jew from Ermreuth by the name of Bausoh. Soldiers
hurried to prevent the crime after hearing the child's scream. (Dr. J.

1810 A.D. -- Among the records of the Damascus trial a letter exists
from John Barker, ex-consul of Aleppo, which speaks of a poor
Christian who suddenly disappeared from Aleppo. The Hebrew Raphael of
Ancona was charged with having butchered her and draining all of her

1812 A.D. --On the island Corfu in October three Jews who had
strangled a child were condemned to death. Some time later, the child
of a Greek, called Riga, was stolen and killed by the Jews. (Achille

1817 A.D. -- The Indictment of the murder committed in this year
against the little girl Marianna Adamoviez, was quashed due to a lapse
of time.

1823 A.D. -- On the 22nd of April, at Velisch in the Russian
government of Vitebsk, the 3œ- year-old son of the invalid Jemelian
Ivanov was stolen, tortured to death, and his blood drained. Despite a
great deal of statements by witnesses charging the Jews, the trial was

1824 A.D. -- In Beirut the interpreter Fatch-allah-Seyegh was murdered
by his Jewish landlord, as the investigation established, for ritual
purposes.

1826 A.D. -- In Warsaw a murdered 5-year-old boy was found whose body
had more than a hundred wounds showing that his blood had been
drained. The whole of Warsaw was in a state of insurrection;
everywhere the Jews protested their innocence without having been
accused. The depositions made to the courts, together with the medical

1827 A.D. -- At Vilna in Russia the stabbed corpse of a farmer's
child, Ossib Petrovicz, was found. According to the testimony of the
16-year-old shepherd Zulovski, he was kidnapped by the Jews. (Nach

1829 A.D. -- In Turin the wife of the merchant Antoine Gervalon was
kidnapped from her husband. In the cellar she was prepared for her
sacrifice by two rabbis. With her last bit of strength she answered
her husband who was going through the Jewish quarter with several
soldiers, calling her name aloud. Thus, she was freed. However, the

1831 A.D. -- Killing of the daughter of a corporal of the Guard in St.
Petersburg. Four judges recognized it as a blood murder, while a fifth
doubted it. (Desportes)

1834 A.D. -- According to the Testimony of Jewess Ben Nound who
converted to Christianity, an old Gentile man in Tripoli was tied up
by 4 or 5 Jews and hanged from an orange tree by his toes. At the
moment when the old man was close to death the Jews cut his throat
with a butcher knife and let the body hang until all the blood had

1839 A.D. -- On the Island of Rhodes, and 8-year-old merchant's boy,
who was delivering eggs to some Jews, did not return. Jewish money
power took effect, and the court proceedings were delayed and finally

1839 A.D. -- In Damascus the customs office discovered a Jew carrying
a bottle of blood. The Jew offered 10,000 piastres in order to hush up

1843 A.D. -- Murders of Christian children by the Jews on Rhodes,

1875 A.D. -- At Zboro, in the county of Saros in Hungary, several Jews
attacked the 16-year-old servant girl Anna Zampa in the house of her
master, Horowitz. The knife was already raised above her when a
coachman accidentally intervened, thus saving her. The court
President, Bartholomaus Winkler, who was in debt to the Jews, was
afraid to bring the criminals to justice.

1877 A.D. -- In the village of Szalaacs, in the country of Bihar
(Hungary), Josef Klee's 6-year-old niece, Theresia Szaabo, and his 9-
year-old nephew, Peter Szaabo, were murdered by the Jews. However, a
Jewish doctor held the inquest, who declared the children were not

1879 A.D. -- In Budapest, before the Purim feast, a young servant girl
in the Jewish Quarter was put to sleep with a drink. 24 hours after
the feast, she woke up so weak she could hardly walk. On her right
forearm, her left thigh, and her body below the navel she discovered
red circular wounds like spots of blood, with small openings in the

1879 A.D. -- At Kutais in the Caucasus, 4 Jewish image sellers killed
a 6- year-old girl. Between her fingers had been cut with a knife; on
her legs, a little above the calf, horizontal incisions had been made,
and there was not one drop of blood in her veins. With the aid of the
powerful Jews of Russia the guilty ones escaped punishment. (Univers.)

1881 A.D. --At Kaschau in Hungary the daughter of a certain Josef
Koczis disappeared. Two weeks later the body was found in a well

1881 A.D. -- In Steinamanger the 8-year-old granddaughter of a
coachman who worked for the Jews disappeared. (M. Onody, evenda.)

1881 A.D. -- In Alexandria the Jews again killed a Christian child
called Evangelio Fornoraki. The parents of the strangled child,
discovered on the sea- shore, allowed a post-mortem examination which
lasted several days and was the cause of riots against the Jews. The
Baruch family, prime suspects in the murder, were arrested, but later

1881 A.D. -- In the Galician town of Lutscha, the Polish maid servant
Franziska Muich, who worked for the Jewish tavern-keeper Moses Ritter,
and had been raped by him, was murdered by Moses and his wife, Gittel
Ritter, according to the testimony of the farmer Mariell Stochlinski.

1882 A.D. -- At Tisza-Eszlar, shortly before the Jewish Passover, the
14- year-old Christian girl Esther Solymosi disappeared. Since the
girl was last seen nearby the synagogue, suspicion was directed
immediately on the Jews. The two sons of the temple-servant Josef
Scharf, 5-year-old Samuel and the 14-year- old Moritz, accused their
father and stated that Esther was led into the Temple and butchered
there. The corpse of the girl was never found.

1882 A.D. -- At Galata, the ghetto of Constantinople, a child was
enticed into a Jewish house where more than 20 people saw her go in.
On the following day a corpse was found in the Golden Horn causing a
great agitation among the Christian and Moslem population.

1882 A.D. -- A short time later another very similar case transpired
in Galata. Serious, a distinguished lawyer of the Greek community,
sent a petition to the representatives of all the Christian European
powers at Constantinople so that justice might be done: but the Jews
bribed the Turkish police, who allowed certain documents in the case
to disappear. Bribed doctors declared the mother of the kidnapped and
murdered child to be mentally deranged.

1883 A.D. -- Once more a ritual murder occurred in Galata. The police,
bribed with Jewish money, prevented an investigation. The newspaper
Der Stamboul, which strongly spoke out against the guilty ones, was
suppressed. This suppression cost the Jews 140,000 francs.

1884 A.D. -- At Sturz (West Prussia) the dismembered body of 14-year-
old Onophrius Cybulla was found one January morning under a bridge.
According to the doctor's opinion, the dismemberments showed great
expertise and dexterity in the use of the knife. Although the murdered
boy had been strong and plethoric, the dead body was completely
bloodless. Immediately suspicion fell on various Jews, and during the
investigation some very troublesome facts emerged. These, however,
were not considered sufficient and the arrested Jews were released.

1885 A.D. -- At Mit-Kamar in Egypt a young Copt was butchered for the
Easter celebrations.

1888 A.D. -- At Breslau in July, a crime was committed by Max
Bernstein, a 24-year-old Rabbinical candidate at the Talmudic college,
against a 7-year-old boy, Severin Hacke, whom Bernstein had enticed
into his room. Bernstein withdrew blood from the boy's sex organ.
After the judge's verdict Bernstein confessed: "The Bible and the
Talmud teach that the gravest of sins can only be atoned for through
innocent blood." Therefore, he had withdrawn blood from the boy. The
Jews recognized the danger and declared Bernstein to be a 'religious
maniac.'

1891 A.D. -- Murder of a boy at Xanten, on the Rhine. The 5-year-old
robust boy of the Catholic cabinet-maker, Hegemann, was found in the
evening at 6 o'clock on June 29th, by the maid Dora Moll, in the cow
shed of the town councilor Kuppers, with his legs spread apart, laying
on his side with a circular formed ritual cut, carried out by a
skilled hand, and bled white. The boy was already missed at 10:30 in
the morning. He was seen by 3 witnesses being pulled into the house of
the Jewish butcher Buschoff.

1899 A.D. -- On March 26th the single 19-year-old seamstress, Agnes
Kurza, was slaughtered by the hand of the Jewish butcher Leopold
Hilsner. The corpse was found bloodless. The murderer was sentenced to
death by the court of Kuttenberg.

1900 A.D. -- At Konitz (West Prussia) on the 11th of March 1900, the
18- year-old college freshman, Ernst Winter, was bestially murdered.
Two days later pieces of his dismembered body were fished out of the
Monschsee; almost five days later, on April 15th, the first Easter
holy day, his head was found by children playing in the bushes. The
corpse was completely bloodless. Winter was ritually murdered. The
murder was carried out in the cellar of the Jewish Butcher, Moritz
Levi, after the victim had been lured there by a young Jewess. On the
day of the murder, a large number of foreign Jews were in Konitz who
departed the next day without any plausible reason being given for
their visit. Among them were the butchers Haller from Tuchel,
Hamburger from Schlochau, Eisenstedt from Prechlau and Rosenbaum from
Ezersk. The Konitz butcher Heimann disappeared shortly after the
murder.

1911 A.D. -- The 13-year-old schoolboy, Andrei Youshchinsky was
murdered in Kiev on March 12th. After eight days, his corpse was found
in a brickyard completely slashed to pieces and bloodless. Suspicion
fell on the Jewish manager of the brickyard, Mendel Beiliss. The case
did not come to trial until two and a half years later (Sept. 29th to
Oct. 28th, 1913). In the intervening period numerous attempts were
made to lead the investigating officers on to the wrong track.
Meanwhile a large number of incriminating witnesses suffered sudden
and unnatural deaths; false accusations and confessions followed one
after another due to huge money bribes. Behind the accused lurking in
the shadows, was the figure of Faivel Schneerson of the Lubavitchers,
leader of the 'Zadiks' ('Saints') of the Chassidim sect, who was the
spiritual director of the murder. The trial ended with the release of
Beiliss, but at the same time the court established that the murder
had taken place inside the Jewish brickyard, which was the religious
center of the Kiev Jews, for the purpose of obtaining blood. Almost
all the prosecutors, witnesses, and authorities who had spoken out
against Judaism, later fell victim to the Bolshevik Terror.

1926 A.D. -- The bodily remains of the children Hans and Erika Fehse
were found in a parcel on the public square in Breslau. The children
had been butchered. The corpses were bloodless. The genitals were
missing. The Jewish butcher was believed the culprit. He disappeared
without a trace.

1928 A.D. -- The college sophomore Helmut Daube was butchered on the
night of the 22nd-23rd of March, 1928. In the morning, the blood-
drained corpse lay in front of his parents home. (cf. 'Der Sturmer')

1929 A.D. -- The murder at Manau. The boy Karl Kessler was found
butchered and bloodless on March 17th, 1929, several days before
Passover. (cf. 'Der Sturmer')

1932 A.D.-- Martha Kaspar was butchered and dismembered at Paderhorn
on March 18th, 1932. The pieces of the corpse were drained of blood.
The Jew, Moritz Meyer, was convicted and received 15 years in prison.

England how necessary royal protection was, and how easily religious
passions could be aroused, even among the highest clergy. For it was the
Bishop of Norwich, William Turbe, who was most active in prosecuting the
charge of ritual murder against the Jews of his city, up to the supreme
tribunal, the court held before the King himself. (See Jessopp and James,

Although contemporary Jewish authors deny such things as ritual murder, some
admit that there may have been some unpleasant Jews around at the time.
